Biela to appear in court today.
posted on: December 10, 2008
Prosecutors will be calling witnesses before a justice of the peace today to make their case that James Michael Biela should go to trial on charges that he raped and killed Brianna Denison, sexually assaulted two other college students and tried to rape a third.
he hearing, in Reno Justice Court, is scheduled to run through the afternoon.
Should the judge find that there is enough evidence to bind Biela over for trial, his next hearing will be an arraignment in Washoe District Court.
Biela, a 27-year-old pipe-fitter, was arrested on Nov. 25 and charged with strangling Denison, a 19-year-old college student who disappeared from a friend's home on Jan. 20 and was found dead in a field on Feb. 15.
DNA evidence linked Biela to Denison's killing and sexual assault, and it led to additional charges.
He is charged with the kidnapping and sexual assault of a woman on Dec. 16, an attempt to sexually assault another woman on Nov. 13, and the sexually assault of a third on Oct. 22 at gunpoint at the parking complex at the University of Nevada, Reno.
Biela will be represented by Robert Davies, a lawyer with the Washoe County Public Defender's office.

Brianna Guide is ready

The Bring Bri Justice Foundation has created the Brianna Guide to aid in the search for a missing person. Additionally, the Foundation has created a search team to work with law enforcement in recovering missing persons. Currently, the search team is undergoing training from the Washoe County Sheriff's Department. The Foundation Center, in the Smithridge Shopping Plaza, will serve as the search center, in the event that someone from Washoe County is missing. If so, we will be in need of both search volunteers as well as donations, so please add your name to the volunteer list and donate using this web page.
